A multipoint locking system is the type of lock found on most modern uPVC and composite doors. Unlike a traditional single-point lock, a multipoint mechanism secures the door at several points along the frame simultaneously — typically using a combination of hooks, rollers, bolts and a deadbolt — all operated by a single handle lift and key turn.
Because these mechanisms are used every day and carry out a lot of work, they are subject to wear over time. When a component begins to fail, the door can become increasingly difficult to lock — or stop locking altogether.
These are some of the most frequent faults we are called out to diagnose.
The handle is increasingly difficult to lift, or feels noticeably stiffer than it used to. This is often an early sign of wear in the gearbox or mechanism.
The handle moves freely but the locking points do not engage. This usually indicates a failed gearbox or a broken connection within the mechanism.
Hooks, rollers or bolts are not meeting the keeps in the frame. This can be caused by a failing mechanism or by the door being out of alignment.
The euro cylinder is stiff, worn, or has seized. In some cases the cylinder itself needs replacing; in others the mechanism is preventing the key from completing its travel.
The locking points are not meeting the keeps unless the door is held in a particular position. This is often a door alignment issue rather than a failed lock.
The central gearbox — which drives the locking points when the handle is lifted — has broken internally. The handle may feel loose or offer no resistance.
The lock works, but requires noticeably more effort than before. Gradual deterioration of this kind usually means a component is wearing out and will eventually fail.
A component within the multipoint strip has broken, preventing one or more locking points from operating. The door may appear to lock but not be fully secured.
Not necessarily. A locking problem does not automatically mean the entire multipoint mechanism needs to come out. Some apparent lock failures are actually caused by door misalignment — the door has dropped or shifted in the frame, so the locking points can no longer reach the keeps correctly. In these cases, adjusting the door or the keeps may resolve the problem without replacing any lock components.
Where the mechanism itself has failed, the repair required depends on what has broken. In many cases it is possible to replace just the gearbox rather than the entire multipoint strip. In others, a full mechanism replacement is the most practical solution.
